No Voice, No Choice
Scope has published the results of a recent survey on disabled people's experiences of accessing communication aids in the report "No Voice, No Choice".
Their survey indicated that as many as 1.5 million people in the UK have speech, language and communication needs with as many as 106,000 5-18 year olds who could benefit from the use of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC).
The report highlighted the problems experienced in getting a professional assessment of communication needs and the lack of funding available for the equipment and training. Sadly it concluded that access to AAC equipment remains a lottery.
